Stonewall During the War
General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was first in the war serving in the Virginia militia for the Confederates. He
gained a name for himself during the battle of Manassas. One of his fellow fighters said "There is Jackson standing
like a stone wall." This is how he gained his nickname. Because of his job well done in this battle, he was
promoted to general. He continued to become more famous because of his amazing skills needed in the war.
Other battles he played a large part in include the battle of second Manassas/Bull Run and the battle of
Fredericksburg. In his Valley campaign of 1862, he helped to gain a victory through his maneuvering of his troops.
His military contributions were his most significant ones to the history of the Civil War. During the battle of
Chancellorsville, Stonewall got shot three times, twice in the arm and once in the hand. He went into medical care
and was treated, but died later of pneumonia.
